How to personalize ChatGPT so its answers fit your life
Out of the box, an AI assistant answers as if it's talking to an average person. Ten minutes of setup changes that permanently.
Most people judge AI assistants on their first answer to a cold question. That's the worst version of the tool. Personalization is the difference between a generic reply and one that already accounts for how many people you cook for, how much time you have on a Tuesday, and whether you want three sentences or three pages.
Nothing here is technical. You're writing a short description of your situation and your preferences, saving it once, and letting every future conversation start from there.
The three layers of personalization
1. Standing instructions
Every major assistant has a settings area for instructions that apply to all conversations. In ChatGPT it's under Settings, then Personalization, then Custom Instructions. Claude calls it personal preferences; Gemini has saved info. They all do the same job: text you write once that's silently added to every chat.
2. Memory
Memory is what the assistant notices and saves as you talk — that you're planning a move, that you dislike coriander. It's convenient but less predictable than instructions, and it's worth reviewing occasionally. Both ChatGPT and Gemini let you view, edit, and delete saved memories.
3. Per-conversation context
The context you give inside one chat: the document you pasted, the constraints of this particular trip. This is where the specifics live, so your standing instructions can stay short.
What to put in your standing instructions
Five to eight sentences is plenty. A useful profile covers:
- Your situation in general terms. Household size, whether you work, the broad shape of your days.
- Your constraints. Time available, budget level, whether you drive, any fixed commitments.
- Your preferences. Food, tone, tools you actually use.
- How you want answers. Length, formatting, whether you want options or a single recommendation.
- What to avoid. Filler openings, excessive caveats, jargon, unsolicited motivational language.
A starting template
Adapt this and paste it into your assistant's instructions field:
- I live with two other adults and cook most evenings on weekdays.
- I have about 30 minutes for dinner on weeknights and more time on weekends. We avoid pork and don't like very spicy food.
- I work office hours and often need help drafting short, friendly emails.
- Answer concisely and get to the point. Use short paragraphs or bullets. If a question is ambiguous, ask one clarifying question rather than guessing.
- Tell me when you're uncertain, and don't invent specifics like prices or opening hours — say I should check.
Keep it deliberately limited
Personalization is not an invitation to hand over your life. Practical everyday preferences do nearly all the work. Leave out passwords, account numbers, government identifiers, your exact address, and medical details — they add risk and don't make answers better. Our guide to what ChatGPT should know about you walks through the line in more detail.
Test it, then adjust
After saving your instructions, ask something you'd normally ask and see whether the answer reflects them. If it's still too long, add a firmer line about length. If it keeps suggesting things you can't do, your constraints need to be more explicit. Treat the profile as something you edit a few times over a month, not a one-shot document.
Personalized answers are still generated text. Verify anything consequential — prices, medical or legal questions, opening hours, technical instructions — with a reliable source.
