How to make ChatGPT remember your preferences
Repeating yourself in every conversation is the most common reason AI feels like more effort than it's worth. Here's how to fix it for good.
By default, each new conversation starts fresh. Anything you explained yesterday is gone today. Modern assistants offer two ways around this, and they behave quite differently.
Instructions: reliable, because you wrote them
Custom instructions (ChatGPT), personal preferences (Claude), and saved info (Gemini) are text you control, applied to every conversation. This is where anything you genuinely care about should live: your household, constraints, food preferences, and how you want answers written. It's predictable, editable, and easy to audit. See our custom instructions guide for what to write.
Memory: convenient, but less predictable
Memory is the assistant noticing things as you chat and saving them — that you're moving house, that you're allergic to something, that you prefer metric units. It's genuinely handy, but you didn't choose the wording, and it can capture the wrong thing or hold onto something long after it stopped being true.
You can steer it deliberately:
- "Remember that I prefer answers under 150 words unless I ask for detail."
- "Remember that we cook for three and avoid pork."
- "Forget what you saved about my old job."
Review and clean up what's saved
In ChatGPT, memories are listed under Settings → Personalization → Manage memories, where you can delete individual entries or all of them. Gemini's saved info and Claude's preferences work similarly. Two habits are worth keeping:
- Review every couple of months. Delete anything out of date; stale context is a silent source of bad suggestions.
- Turn memory off for sensitive conversations. Most assistants offer a temporary or incognito chat that isn't saved. Use it when you'd rather nothing persisted.
When it still forgets
- Very long conversations drift. Older context gets crowded out. Start a fresh chat and restate the essentials in two lines.
- Different apps, different memory. Preferences saved in one assistant don't transfer to another. Keep your profile text in a note so you can paste it anywhere.
- Instructions may be too vague. "Be brief" is ignorable; "under 150 words" is not.
- Signed-out or shared use. Nothing persists without your own account.
Keep a portable profile
The most durable approach is a short note on your own device — five to ten lines about your situation and preferences. Paste it into any assistant's instructions field. Tools change; your profile shouldn't have to be rewritten each time.
What not to have it remember
Never save credentials, identifiers, financial account details, your exact address, or medical records. Saved memory is one more place that information could persist or be exposed. Practical everyday preferences give you almost all of the benefit — more detail in what ChatGPT should know about you.
